The piano, a privileged instrument of classical music and jazz
Born in Italy in the 18th century and perfected over time, the piano is today one of the most popular musical instruments in the world. Offering an exceptional sound that suits all musical genres, it is an orchestra all by itself and stands out as the instrument of choice for solo performance. It provides simple, effective, but also and above all entertaining entertainment.
It was in Italy, specifically in Florence, that the first models of the piano appeared around 1720. This was thanks to Bartolomeo Cristofori, who found a way to obtain better sound volume than the harpsichord and the clavichord. It makes it possible to play several notes at once, giving the musician the ability to play any melody.
Considered the king of classical instruments, the piano was the domain of great composers such as J.S. Bach, Mozart, Schubert and Debussy. However, it also contributed to jazz and to the popular music of the 20th century, notably through what is called the piano bar. Many jazz musicians, such as Scott Joplin and Brad Mehldau, made it their instrument of choice.
The piano has long been a favorite way to be entertained, both in private and in public. At one time it served as the radio, being the only way to play music at home. Historians even suppose that the first Black jazz pianists learned to master this instrument at the urging of certain white people who wanted to enjoy inexpensive entertainment.
Much appreciated for its sound, it has crossed the Italian borders and been exported all over Europe, all the way to the United States and their famous saloons, where it reigned supreme in entertainment. Over the years, its fame has never stopped growing in the entertainment world. As proof, the piano-bar atmosphere is still very popular today. At the origin of this piano bar concept was the musician and inventor Voel Martin, an invention that had already been imagined by Boris Vian. He had indeed mentioned the term piano cocktail in his novel Froth on the Daydream.
