Gypsy jazz:
Gypsy jazz is a music that comes from northeastern France. It is a blend of jazz, Central European music, Klezmer music, traditional songs and music, and musette. Traveling communities invented this music. Swing jazz and the influences of dance-hall music eventually gave the term “manouche music” to this type of jazz.
The initiator was the guitarist Django Reinhardt in the years around 1934 with the violinist Stephane Grappeli, both leaders of the “Hot Club de France” Quintet.
Unlike jazz, the rhythm is provided by the guitars, which replace the drums, and then the double bass supporting the tempo. The violin is there to announce the themes and choruses: a solo during the piece.
Many festivals have been created around this music and around Django Reinhardt. Gypsy jazz has become a popular music. Musicians can easily get together to play the standards of the style, such as Nuages, Douce ambiance, Coquette, Minor Swing…
