Music holds a special place in the lives of older people. In a care home, it can soothe, awaken memories and above all create unique moments of sharing. For facility managers, organising quality musical entertainment is a challenge that requires choosing artists able to adapt to the specific expectations of the residents.

Finding a suitable singer can transform the atmosphere of your facility, making every performance an unforgettable moment. But how do you make the right choice? This article guides you through the criteria to consider when selecting the ideal singer.

The 4 selection criteria for choosing a singer for older people

Choosing a singer to entertain at a care home event should not be done lightly. Several criteria must be considered to make sure the performance lives up to expectations, both in terms of entertainment and the residents’ well-being.

A suitable musical repertoire

The musical repertoire is arguably one of the most important elements. Older people grew up with songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s, eras marked by artists and musical genres that still resonate with them. It is therefore essential to choose a singer whose repertoire includes these classics. This not only captivates the audience but also revives memories, creating a strong emotional bond with the residents.

A suitable volume

The residents’ hearing comfort must be a priority when you organise a tea dance or a musical entertainment for older people. A volume that is too high will be unpleasant, even painful, for some residents. It is therefore imperative to

You should then find a singer able to adapt to the acoustics of the room, taking into account the audience’s hearing sensitivity. A good sound system, well controlled and gentle, guarantees a pleasant experience for everyone.

A singer who involves the audience

Interaction with the audience is also a decisive criterion. A good singer does not just sing; they know how to build a connection with their audience. The ability to talk with the residents and encourage them to sing or dance can turn a simple performance into a moment of sharing and joy.

Involving the residents will create a great atmosphere for your musical entertainment and contribute to a sense of belonging and community among the residents.

The singer’s reliability and professionalism should be assessed before any performance. An artist must be punctual, flexible and respectful of their audience and of the care teams

Making sure the singer has professional experience with a senior audience lets you focus on the residents’ experience, without having to deal with mishaps or inappropriate behaviour.

An activity that directly affects your residents’ health

The impact of well-chosen musical entertainment goes beyond simple entertainment. Music has recognised therapeutic benefits, particularly in the care of older people. It can play a significant role in the residents’ cognitive and motor stimulation.

The singer inevitably has a crucial role to play in this equation by getting the residents to take part, laugh and sing. Their goal is to give them a good time together. At JLBprod, we strive to offer you professional performances that enable the stimulation of older people.
